Costume and Props

We believe that in a folk ( winter music video ) it is alwys best for the female to have a bland look about her , eg: not a lot of makeup, plain and fresh faced. , this would then fit in well with the emotion which we want wihtin the video.

In our music video the emotion is sad and lonely; therefore we are not going to dress our actor/tress in bright colourful costumes when it then wouldnt fit in well with the emotion that we want to get across.

We believe the following items are what we are going to need in our music video:

Close up guitar
Panning shot , when standing up
Panning when walking around the hills
Long shot from actress behind, staring at the hills
A dissolve or fade shot then as the actress is sat on the fence with her guitar, this is then a mid shot
We then go to a birds eye view shot of the actresses feet
Dissolving into another birds eye view of her feet yet in a different location, (friar street)
Panning the camera up her body from a good metre back
Camera once panned up the body , is then focused on the actresses face , with a close up shot
Dissolve onto a long shot
Tracking shot of the actress coming towards us
Mid long shot as the actress swings round the lamppost
Closeup shot as boy and actress come face to face
Dissolving into actress and boy sat in a bench , this is then a mid shot.

Audience.

When making our  music video we intend to try and have an effect on the audience that they show concern and compassion for the girl as she clearly seems distressed walking around on her own and they way her body  language makes her appear sad.
However we don't want to have a negative effect on the audience that when they watch the video they themselves start to feel sad and emotional as they wont want to watch it again. We would also like for them to be intrigued as too why she is upset and feel involved whilst watching our video.

Following the cultural studies approach carried out by David Morley we hope that when audience watch our video that they have a preferred reading of our video and they understand the point we are trying to make and enjoy it.
However if they have an aberrant view then they do not understand the view we had when making our video and our confused by the meaning we are trying to express therefore our planning and research obviously wasnt very good to portray the right image in our video.

Ideas

We decided that to make our music video and CD covers more original we would create a  "fairy" theme using the woods to create a magical woodland feel which would intrigue the audience.

We would get our actress to wear long flowing material clothing to create a magical and mysterious appearance to herself as she wandered through the woods.
Using the trees and leaves around her to create the woodland effect of  somewhere completely different and unknown to the audience.

However after we talked about the logistics of creating this we realised it may not be as effective as the audience may not understand the "fairy" element and be confused.  Also we would not be able to transform the woods into looking that different without intruding on the habitats within the woods.

Fonts.

I have decided to use the font style vanessa. I think it is more inkeeping with the folk genre of music.

Digipaks.

This is a rough idea of what my Digipak will look like.

My ideas are:
Autumnal colours with trees, leaves, haystack and elements of nature featured in my digipak.
Natural lightning
There will be one girl wrapped up warm ready for winter in keeping with the theme of autumn.
Font will be very free and flowing almost like hand writing.

Andrew Goodwins Theory

Andrew Goodwin has a number of theories related to music videos;

There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. There are three different types of  visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
There is also a realtionship between the music and the visuals. They also use the same three types of visuals.
That each genre has their own specific visual and type of way to represent their songs.
Lots of close ups on the main vocalist/ actor.
There may also be intertextual references to other types of media texts such as magazines and posters.

And if you look closely you can see that many of these features are present in all music videos, however they vary depending on the genre of the music and how mainstream or independent the artists are.

Redundancy and Entropy.

Redundancy is when something is very predictable and expected, it is an effective way of communicating with people as it is straightforward to understand. The opposite to be redundant is entropy. If a text is entropic this means that it is unpredictable and can be confusing at it seems to have no real meaning or links to the text. Most people will also find that and entropic texts are unfamiliar to them.

I feel that when making my own music video that the video should be an equal balance between being redundant and entropic. This will mean that have an element of entropy in the video will make it interesting to watch and surprise viewers in an appealing however will be redundant enough that the links and ideas work well together so the viewers are not confused.

Digipak Research.

Feedback From Our Pitch.

"We didnt know who are target audience was and the specific genre of music"
We have established now that our genre is folk music and must now carry out more research into this specific genre and also into our target audience.

"Although filming in black and white sounds effective, is it appropriate for the folk genre?"
Now that we have established who are target audience is through our research into the folk genre we have now decided that we wont be filming in black and white as it creates more of a grime/urban feel so will be using natural light.

"How many actors were we going to feature in our music video and would it be easy to get them together at the same time"
We will only be using one actor- a girl. so timing wont be an issue as we only need to organise oursleves and the one actor the only timing issue will be how short the days are as we plan to use natural lighting so filming in late december early january could cause a slight problem.

"As the music video is being filmed outside do you need to gain permission to film on their fields?"
We will be filming most of our music video in fields in hallow and around the village so permission is not needed however a few of the shots will be featured in friar street so although no permission is needed we will need to be aware of members of the public walking by.

"As lots of the shots will be filmed outside how will lighting me used effectively?"
We plan to film most of our shots earlier in the daytime so that natural lighting can be used at all times. Also when there is only a small amount of artificial lighting if large white boards are placed around to project the light around the area- this should be sufficient enough for filming.

Our Pitch

Our ideas that we created by using moodboards to create images that we felt represented the target audience and the sort of impression we wanted to create in our video.

Our final idea/  storyboard that we pitched.

Theorist and helath and safety to think through the logistical features whilst filming our music video.

Creativity

This week we have tried to be more creative instead of just writing things down whilst preparing for our pitch.
Ken robinson says that creativity us an orginal idea that has value.
- We used play dough to make models from what visuals we got from our chosen piece of music.
- We also collected images and fonts to create moodboards related to our target audience.
-  Drew pictures to use as a storyboard.

The Kooks: Naive.

The video has an amplyfying meaning a sit is the bands impression of realtionships particuarly from the male persepective on how naive young people can be particuarly girls and also how they cannot hold their drink. However it takes a literal meaning from the title of the ing which is 'naive' to show this.

The video features the band particuraly focusing on the lead singer who is the main actor with him featuring in the establishing shot this connotes that he is the main focus of the group. There is use of shallow focus throughout focusing just on the two main characters- the boy and the girl with shoits of his band members towards the end, this connotes that the story si all about this couple and that everyone else is insignificant.

The video reprents that the band are just typical lads that like having a good time and going to parties, this is shown through the chilledout location of the video which is set in someones house party. They just wearring normal everyday clothes with messy hair which is typical of this genre and can be related to by the target audience of their music.

Ed Sheeran: The A Team.

The video is ampyfying as it is the artsist impression if not a genralisation of people living on the street and taking drugs. However the video has a literal meaning particuarly at the end when its say "angels to fly, angels to die" with a shot of the sky where angels and flying are associated.

Ed sheeran is not the main actor in this video connoting that he wants to be more associated with his music and not the star image.
The video focuses on a young girl and her story with lots of close ups on her face to shjow the emotion on how she feels and how it has effected her. However he makes an appearance buying a big issue of the girl showing he is caring and trying to help people in this situation- which is the point of the song.
The narrative of the story is the spiralling descendent of drugs and the negative effect they have. This is shown by the use of the video being in black and white and connotes how lonely and what a dark place it can be when you do drugs. Many of the shots are joined by jump cuts creating and edgy and jumpy finish connoting the tense unpredictable life she leads and how drugs can effect you.

The mise en scene particuarly the locations are urban, this connotes that these are real places therefore real issues. The establishing shot of her lying on a park bench connotes of lonely she is and gets viewers wondering who she is, and why is there?
Some shots also take place in a high street with the shot sped up connoting that life is passing her by and she is wasting it. Shallow focus is also on her when she is surrounded by people connting that they ignore the issue aswell as the people.

50 Cent: Candy Shop.

The video follows Goodwin's theory that there are different types of videos. This one is illustrative throughout the song, as the words match up to particular parts of the song. For example when he sings about a "love doctor" and the woman is wearing a nurses outfit and 50 cent is sat in what appears to be doctors room. During the chorus the shots are focused on 50 cent however in the verses most of the shots and close ups focus on all the different girls.

The mise en scene of the video is typical of a rappers video and contains girls in little clothing dancing around the male in a sexy way. It also shows the narration of the star that he has arrived and this is connoted at the begining with an establishing shot of a large mansion. beautiful women and all the jewellery.  This particular video presented as dream and the rappers impression of what "candy" is.

The star is seen as powerful and in control as the only man in the house. With many him being in most of the shots and those shots being a mid shot to take in the full impression being given. This connotes the image of a pimp and is supported by being surrounded by lots of different women.

The pace of the video is slow motion. With shots of  the women on their own only in the chorus, however there are lots of different shots, particuarly close ups to show theirs famous and particular parts of their body with  pans the camera up and down the women's bodies. This is to keep the viewer entertained and speeds the pace up.

This video is amplifying as it is 50 cents interpretations of a candy shop however there are a few literal meanings throughout the song with a few close ups  of sweets and some of the girls are eating different types of sweets in a few of the shots.

Busted.

Research & Planning:
- I found writing lists and the photgraphic storyboard useful especially as every shot was shown and the timing so that shooting went to plan and that no re shots had to be carried out afterwards.

- We could have done mor elists and planning to make sure that everyone was included in bringing props and costunes.

Future planning:

- research into other videos of the same genre.
- make lists that cover every aspects of the planning such as location, costume, lighting.
- screen shots of each one to make sure the pace fits in with the song
- make sure actors have practised lipsynching.

Production: Digital Technology.
- my knowledge of youtube increased as i had to set up a youtube and account and embed it into my blog which i hadnt done before.
- i also became more confident when using premierePro and found that i was still familair with the tools available and how they worked.
- I learnt how to remove the original soundclip from the filming taken and place music over the top.
- However i would like to be more knowledgeable in using premiere and make my videos look more professional by using more of the special affects and how to speed and slow down clips.

Production:
- I learnt how to set the camera up at different heights to make sure it was at the best possible angle to replicate the busted video.
- The shoot went well and on time due to the specific planning and shooting script however there was a lack of people in the final shoot which may have effected the appaearnace of the final scene however we overcame this difficulty by downsizing the size of the frame.

Folk Music.

The Artists.

Photos of the bands are usually shown with their instruments to portray that they are song writers and play the instruments featured in their music. This also shows that they are passionate about the music and instruments they play.

Digi Paks.
The font used portrays a very "proper" image to the CD cover interpreting that the target audience for the CD would be well educated and appreciate the work gone into the music and not be fans of mainstream generic music.

They also hold images of quite random but significant importance possible to the artist giving the album a personal feel.

The colours used in the digipak covers are all of dark colours mainly background portraying that the genre of music is quite dark and emotional dealing with real life issues.
